Hi, I’m Monica Sparks
and I’m running for Mayor of Kentwood because I believe in people over politics, and I believe our city is full of potential.
I’m a proud mom of two, a cancer survivor, a small business owner, and your four term Kent County Commissioner. I know what it means to work hard, overcome challenges, and keep moving forward. I’ve built businesses from the ground up, including a wellness spa, a consulting firm, and a nonprofit that trains Mental Health Advocates in seven languages. I’ve also helped manage a $624 million budget for over 650,000 residents. I don’t just talk about getting things done—I do the work.
I’ve seen firsthand how strong leadership can change lives. That’s why I created the S.P.A.R.K.S. Plan—my vision to build a safer, more inclusive, and opportunity filled Kentwood. I’m focused on the things that matter most: public safety, affordable housing, support for small businesses, clean neighborhoods, and real partnerships that lift everyone.
I lead with compassion, courage, and a deep love for this community. My door is open, and my feet are already moving. Because leadership isn’t about pointing fingers—it’s about showing up, listening, and working together.

I’ve served four terms as your Kent County Commissioner, fighting for safer neighborhoods, better housing, and more opportunity for everyone—because I believe leadership means listening, showing up, and doing the work.
I’ve built successful businesses, created jobs, and founded a nonprofit that trains Mental Health Advocates in seven languages. I know what it’s like to face hard times and rise again—and I want every Kentwood resident to have that same chance.
That’s why I created the S.P.A.R.K.S. Plan—a bold, people first vision that focuses on Safety, Partnerships, Advocacy, Resources, Knowledge, and Servant Leadership. It’s not just a plan—it’s a promise.
I’m running for Mayor because Kentwood deserves leadership that lifts, not divides. Someone who sees you, hears you, and works for you.
