KENTWOOD, Michigan — Monica Sparks, a four-term Kent County Commissioner, has put in her bid to run for Kentwood mayor.

Sparks represents District 12, which includes parts of Kentwood, Grand Rapids and Wyoming. She may be running against 12-year incumbent Steven Kepley or any other candidates who file before April 28.

“I am grateful for Mayor Kepley’s years of service and commitment to our city. I look forward to building on the foundation he helped establish while bringing a fresh vision to ignite Kentwood’s future,” Sparks said.

If elected, Sparks would be the first woman and third African American to serve as Mayor of Kentwood.

“As Mayor, I will be collaborative to ensure that every resident of Kentwood has a voice in shaping our city’s future,” Sparks said. “According to the US Census, Kentwood is now in de-population. I am committed to fostering a safer, stronger, and more prosperous community where families and businesses can thrive. I will bring my experience, passion, and proven leadership to the office of Mayor.”

Sparks campaign focuses on her S.P.A.R.K.S. Plan of Action: Safety, partnership, advocacy, resources, knowledge and servant leadership.

“My campaign is about ensuring that every resident of Kentwood feels safe, supported, and empowered,” Sparks said. “Together, we will ignite the future of Kentwood.”
